A detailed list of the general components available on Orbify for environmental monitoring.

RESOLVE Ecoregions 2017

Component Type: Layer

Data Type: Other

Accuracy: Very High

Temporal Resolution: 2017

Description: The 2017 RESOLVE Ecoregions dataset provides an overview of the world's 846 terrestrial ecoregions. Ecoregions, broadly speaking, are expansive ecosystems that span large geographical regions. Each ecoregion is distinguished by its unique blend of biodiversity, which includes a wide array of species, beyond just plants.

Ecoregions are particularly critical for conservation planning, as they are delineated based on ecological rather than political demarcations. They play a key role in identifying and characterizing unique biological communities and habitats within larger biomes, ultimately contributing to the global conservation of biodiversity. This dataset is a result of advancements in biogeography—the science that studies the distribution patterns of plants and animals.

Since its first release in 2001, the ecoregions dataset has been instrumental in a variety of ecological and conservation research. Its applications have been diverse, ranging from examining the ramifications of global climate change on ecosystems, to mapping the distribution of beetles worldwide, and shaping modern conservation approaches.

Indigenous territories

Component Type: Layer

Data Type: Other

Description: Indigenous territories mapped by Native Land, showcasing historical and ancestral regions of indigenous communities.

Project areas

Component Type: Stat

Data Type: Other

Accuracy: High

Spatial Resolution: 30m

Description: The surface area derived from a digital elevation model (DEM) pertains to the computation of the total area encompassed by a three-dimensional terrain, as depicted by the data in the DEM. A DEM serves as a digital representation of the Earth's surface, with elevation information stored in each pixel. Calculating the 3D area entails factoring in the terrain's slope, which indicates the degree of steepness at each pixel. By accounting for the slope, the algorithm approximates the variation in surface area resulting from the inclination of the terrain.

Protected areas

Component Type: Layer

Data Type: Other

Accuracy: Very High

Description: Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. Protected areas are those areas in which human presence or the exploitation of natural resources (e.g. firewood, non-timber forest products, water) is limited. The term "protected area" also includes marine protected areas and transboundary protected areas across multiple borders. As of 2016, there are over 161,000 protected areas representing about 17 percent of the world's land surface area (excluding Antarctica).

Terrain (Digital Elevation)

Component Type: Layer

Data Type: Other

Accuracy: Medium

Description: The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation data is an international research effort that obtained digital elevation models on a near-global scale. This SRTM V3 product (SRTM Plus) is provided by NASA JPL at a resolution of 1 arc-second (approximately 30m).
